About
This subtraction strategy unit provides practice with getting to a ”ten” and then subtracting the rest. Throughout this unit, students will use what they know about the number ten to help them subtract in flexible ways.
Students will realize that 10 (or a multiple of 10) is an easy number to work with, and they can use it to make subtraction easier.
Concrete experiences are KEY to learning flexible strategies like this one. Be sure that you give your students lots of time with ten frames and other representations of tens so they can construct their understanding of this strategy in a visual, concrete way.
