Number talks are a powerful way for your students to build number sense and fact fluency. Traditionally, number talks consist of presenting a problem and having students solve it in different ways - but these math talks will take your routine to an entirely new level. Not only will your students be working with different types of problems, but they will be presented with powerful visuals and models that they will work with in strategic ways. This will build critical thinking skills and flexibility.

This is a completely DONE-FOR-YOU resource with NO prep involved. Simply choose a number talk slide, project it, and discuss - then get ready to see your math conversations transform!

Resource #1: DOT TALKS

Begin your Number Talks routine with Dot Talks. This is a low-floor, high-ceiling activity that will get even your most reluctant learners contributing to the conversation. Dot Talks take the research behind subitizing and help you implement it easily and practically. Better yet, they are FUN for students and are a fantastic way to start number talks in your classroom.

Most of the subitizing activities in Dot Talks are done as quick looks, meaning that you will flash a slide, giving students enough time to see the dots, but not enough time to count them one by one. Students will explain how they saw the dots, and through this sharing time will realize that there are many ways to see, compose, and decompose numbers!

Often you'll find an extension after the quick look, allowing students to visualize different strategies and think flexibly as they practice mental computation.

In this version of Dot Talks, you will find 160 subitizing activities to help your students:

  • build number sense
  • visualize numbers and strategies
  • become strategic and flexible thinkers
  • boost math confidence

Resource #2: MATH CONVERSATIONS

During this number talk routine, students will share and reflect on each other’s strategies. They will learn that math is not all about right answers - it is about thinking flexibly and strategically! As you continue this routine, your students’ math confidence with soar and they will learn to look at problems differently than they have in the past.

This math talk resource was created with the following philosophies in mind:

  • Math is about more than a correct answer. It is about flexible and strategic thinking and the ability to reason.
  • Focusing on different ways of thinking should be a priority.
  • Students benefit from discussing their own strategies and considering the strategies of others.
  • There is no one right way to solve a problem.

This resource includes 200 daily math conversation prompts for your number talk routine. Use one per day as a math warm-up to encourage flexible and strategic thinking. These are delivered to you in Google Slides™ format, but can be saved as a PowerPoint and presented that way.

How can you use these activities in your classroom?

  • Use them as a math warm-up to get students excited about learning.
  • Use them as part of your number talks routine.
  • Use them after a lesson to end math class in a fun, positive way.

Are you ready to take your number sense routine to a whole new level?
