• Make a booklet for each student that includes all the tasks from this math project. Allow your students to choose the order that they complete the tasks, and use it as early finisher activities or morning work.

Your students will be completing six different challenges (or obstacles) in order to find the mask. 

Obstacle #1: Find the secret entrance.

You are ready to begin the task of finding the long lost golden mask inside this pyramid! But this pyramid is not quite like all the others! The entrance is nowhere to be found! You’ll have to figure out how to get inside this pyramid by solving the clues.

YOUR TASK: Order the task cards from smallest sum to largest sum. Then find the card that is in the MIDDLE of the sequence (the 5th card). This is the rock that you will push to open the secret entrance.

Obstacle #2: Escape the staircase trap.

Now that you are inside, you decide to walk down the stone staircase that is right in front of you. But as you are walking, the stairs transform into a rock slide that makes you fall into a small chamber! It was a trap! You call for help but no one can hear you. How will you ever get out of this chamber?

YOUR TASK: To get through the wall, put the puzzle together. Then read the clue and figure out the mystery number.

Obstacle #3: Read the hieroglyphics.

Now that you are out of the chamber, it’s time to find the golden mask! Just then you see symbols on the wall. You will use what you know about Egyptian hieroglyphics to read the message and see what it says!

YOUR TASK: Read the hieroglyphics. Then figure out which chamber holds the mask.

Obstacle #4: Navigate the secret passage.

You know the mask is inside the Five Hundred Chamber. Now to find it! As you continue walking down the dark passage, you start to hear some eerie noises behind you. You begin to run. This is way scarier than you imagined! The Five Hundred Chamber must be close!

YOUR TASK: Use the grid to solve each equation. Write the answers on the recording sheet.

Obstacle #5: Get into the Five Hundred Chamber.

You made it through the passage and you are standing right in front of the Five Hundred Chamber! This is it! This is where the golden mask is hidden! But the door will not open. You see a small sign that reads, “The mystery word will open the door.” The mystery word? You start calling out words that might open the door. “Open sesame!” you call. But nothing happens. You need to figure out the mystery word and get into this chamber fast! 

YOUR TASK: Fill in the missing numbers on each task card. The mystery word will be revealed.

Obstacle #6: Retrieve the golden mask.

You’re in the chamber! And sitting there, right in front of you, is an ancient box. This must be where the golden mask is hidden! When you try to open the box, you find it is locked with a code wheel. You’ll have to figure out the code in order to unlock the box!

YOUR TASK: Solve the equations to reveal the code.
