The area model is a strategy for multi-digit multiplication, allowing students to build conceptual understanding before transitioning to the traditional algorithm. But there is more to teaching the area model than you might think.
We begin with base ten blocks so students can touch, move, and manipulate concrete models to solve an equation. This is where the understanding is built. Not to mention, it’s fun!

Through using concrete manipulatives, we can help our students make connections to more abstract representations of the area model. Later, we'll help them make even more connections to other multi-digit multiplication strategies or the standard algorithm.
This resource includes three free area model worksheets and ideas for how you can make the area model a hands-on activity in your classroom!
