The first step to teaching multi-digit multiplication is to teach methods for conceptual understanding. This is crucial. This includes partial products and/or the box/window method (area model).
If you have taught for conceptual understanding, and are planning to move into traditional long multiplication, lattice multiplication can be a good alternative for some students.
When using lattice multiplication, numbers are organized in a grid and added using diagonal rows. The digits that are carried are written right within the grid, which makes it easier for some students to complete the process of regrouping. These task cards have been designed so that your students will receive practice with the lattice multiplication method in many different ways.
This resource is a fantastic supplement to those teachers currently using the Multi-Digit Multiplication Station in their classroom.
