Your students will complete six different challenges (or obstacles) in order to make it out in this Halloween-themed Escape Room-style activity. They'll crack codes and work together as a team, ultimately overcoming obstacles and saving their dog from the old abandoned house!

Ideas for Use
- Use the individual tasks as part of your Halloween math centers. Place one task at each center and have students rotate through them.
- Make a booklet for each student that includes all the tasks from this math project. Allow your students to choose the order that they complete the tasks, and use it as early finisher activities or morning work.
- Keep students engaged by allowing them to work through this package with a partner.
What's Included?
Your students will be completing six different challenges (or obstacles) in order to rescue the dog and get out of the house.
Obstacle #1: Open the door.
Your friends tell you not to go into the old abandoned house, but you have to get Sparky! What if he’s stuck inside? Everyone in your school says that this house is haunted, but you don’t believe it. “I’ll just quickly go get Sparky and come right back out,” you say. First you’ll need to open the door.
YOUR TASK: Order the arrays from least (smallest) to greatest (largest). Then write the number of squares in each array on the recording sheet. This will open the door.
Obstacle #2: Navigate the dark staircase.
You’ve got the door open and you can hear Sparky. It sounds like he is upstairs. You slowly creep through the house and notice a dark staircase. There are cobwebs everywhere and some of the steps are completely broken. You decide to make your way up the winding staircase.
YOUR TASK: Shade the steps with even answers.
Obstacle #3: Escape the bats.
Now that you’re upstairs, Sparky’s bark sounds closer! You will have to go inside each room to find him. You walk into the first room but something is flying right towards you! Oh no! It’s a bat – and there is not just one of them. There are a bunch of bats swirling around the room just inches from your head! You need to get out of this room quick!
YOUR TASK: Solve the code to find out what a group of bats is called.
Obstacle #4: Get away from the ghost.
Phew! You made it out of the room without getting attacked by bats! You continue down the hallway, but you stop dead in your tracks when you see something move swiftly into one of the rooms. It was a ghost! Your friends were right about this place being haunted! You just want to find your dog and get out of here!
YOUR TASK: Decode the message to find out more about the ghost.
Obstacle #5: Find Sparky.
It sounds like Sparky’s bark is getting closer. You walk into another room and you see him, but his leash is all tangled around an old chair. Just as you get him untangled you hear a loud “SLAM!” behind you. The door has shut and it’s locked! Just then a wind blows some papers in through the window. This is creepy! But maybe these papers can help you.
YOUR TASK: Order the clocks from earliest time to latest time. A mystery word will be revealed.
Obstacle #6: Get out of the house.
Now it’s time to get out of here! This house is getting creepier by the minute. All you need to do now is find your way back to the front door!
YOUR TASK: Order the Halloween words in alphabetical order. Then flip them over, read the mystery message, and complete the task.
