About
Breaking apart numbers by place value is a powerful mental math strategy for addition or subtraction. When we decompose a subtrahend (the number being subtracted), it can make an equation easier to solve.
It’s important for students to understand that there is no one right way to break apart a problem. The focus here is on UNDERSTANDING. When students understand the different ways that numbers can be broken apart, it allows them to use flexible thinking to solve problems.
What's Included?
This strategy unit includes a reference poster, math talks, activity sheets, and workstation activities so that students can build their understanding in different ways.
