Are you looking for a way to reinforce math concepts in an engaging way that helps your students make connections? “The St. Patrick’s Party” is a real-life math project where students will complete seven different tasks – each one involving essential math skills such as graphing, data interpretation, place value, time, money, problem-solving, and more.
Ideas for Use
Math projects are an ideal way to consolidate learning. I recommend using them as an engaging activity AFTER skills have been learned rather than during learning. You will likely find that engagement is very high and that your students ask to do more of these!
There are many ways to use math projects in your classroom. Some of the most popular are:
•a small-group or pairs activity
•a guided math activity to allow you to see where your students are struggling
•a fun, rewarding way to engage your early finishers
•a low-prep, easy-to-implement activity for a substitute teacher
You might choose to print specific tasks to use during Math centers, or you might make a booklet out of all of the tasks and let your students choose which one to do when.

TASK #1: PARTY TIME!
You’re planning a St. Patrick’s Party! Let’s get started with the invitations.

Any party needs great snacks! Let’s go to the store to decide what to buy!

TASK #3: MAKING THE DECORATIONS
You want your house to be decorated perfectly for the party! You and a friend will be making all of the decorations yourselves!
Skills: graphing and data interpretation
TASK #4: THE CANDY TABLE
You’ll be setting up a table just for all of the St. Patrick’s candy that you’ve bought. But we will have to figure out how to divide it into bowls.
Skills: decomposing, base 10 blocks
TASK#5: THE GUESTS ARRIVE
It’s time for the party to start! Your guests arrive one by one. Let’s see what time they arrive!
Skills: time to 5 minutes, elapsed time using a number line, addition
TASK #6: GAME TIME!
Any great party has to have games! Today we’ll be playing “Find the Shamrocks” and “Marshmallow Race.”
Skills: addition, subtraction, comparing and ordering
TASK#7: SIDEWALK DRAWING
Four of your friends draw a St. Patrick’s picture using sidewalk chalk. Let’s see what they drew!
